Evaluating the relationship between marginalization and participation in undeclared work: lessons from Bosnia and Herzegovina

This paper tests competing hypotheses on the relationship between marginalization and participation in undeclared work. The ‘marginalization’ thesis views work as conducted primarily by marginalized populations among which young, unemployed economically fragile people dominate. A ‘reinforcement’ argues that is disproportionately those declared jobs thus economy reinforces, rather than reduces, inequalities produced economy. To evaluate who engages to test these theses, data reported from a 2015 survey of 6,021 randomly selected adult respondents Bosnia Herzegovina. Reporting marginal effects Probit regression analysis, finding groups (the unemployed, younger age groups, with fewer years formal education, lower-income households, rural poorer regions) are all significantly more likely participate implications for theory policy discussed, along limitations study future research required.
